Each of the following are significant quotes in Act I. Respond to at least one of these, explaining who said it, to whom it was said, its meaning in your own words, and its significance to the play. Put the number of which quote you are discussing before your response.
1. "Compare her face with some that I shall show,/And I will make thee think they swan a crow." (Act I, Scene 2)
2. "I'll look to like, if looking liking move;/But no more deep will I endart mine eye/Than your consense give strength to make it fly." (Act I, Scene 3)
3. "Give me a case to put my visage in./A visor for my visor! What care I/What curious eye doth quote deformities?" (Act I, Scene 4)
4. "I fear, too early; for my mind misgives/Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/Shall bitterly begin his fearful date/With this night's revels and expire the term/Of a despised life, closed in my breast,/By some vile forfeit of untimely death./But he that hath the steerage of my course/Direct my sail! On, lusty gentleman!" (Act I, Scene 4)
5. "Patience perforce with willful choler meeting/Makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting./I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall,/Now seeming sweet, convert to bitt'rest gall." (Act I, Scene 5)
6. "Did my heart love 'til now? Forswear it, sight!/For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." (Act I, Scene 5)
7. "My only love sprung from my only hate!/Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/Prodigious birth of love it is to me/That I must love a loathed enemy." (Act I, Scene 5)

ReplyDeleteJuliet said this to the Nurse. I interpret that it means she loves her families worst enemy and that if she would have known he was a Montague she wouldn't have kissed him and that she is cursed to love the one person that her family forbids.
Oh and its significance to the play is that she said it right after she found out he was a Montague.
ReplyDelete7. Juliet said this quote to the Nurse, but she was meaning it about Romeo.
ReplyDeleteI think it means Juliet feels like if she doesnt love now then she will never love in her life time.So now she met Romeo her enemy and she is going to try it out. It plays a significant role in this story because the whole story is about them falling in love and taking their own lives . so by Juliet saying this , its showing she is willing to fall in love with Romeo.
5. Tybalt said this after Capulet told him to calm down and don't start a fight just because Romeo was at the party. I think the part that says "I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall,/Now seeming sweet, convert to bitt'rest gall" means that for now Tybalt will behave and make Capulet happy, but by no means is Tybalt okay with the fact Romeo came to the party and Tybalt wants his fight with Romeo to come some day. This is important because it sort of shows more what Tybalt's personality is and his feelings about the Montagues are. He was very anxious to start a fight just because the 'enemy' came to their party, but we could also see he's just kind of hot-tempered.
ReplyDelete7. I realize this has already been commented on multiple times, but this quote seems to be the most significant. Juliet said this to the Nurse after she saw Romeo. "My only love sprung from my only hate" simply means that she hates the Montagues, but isn't quite sure why. She loves Romeo, but realizes that she is SUPPOSED to hate him. "To early seen unknown, and known to late" is a little bit more difficult to understand for me. I'm assuming this means that Juliet realizes she JUST fell in love with Romeo. She may be questioning herself on whether it's too early to tell, but she also realizes that she doesn't want to wait too long becuase it may be too late by then. "Prodigious birth of love to me" stumped me but I looked up prodigious and it means "great in size or situation; enormous". This is a great adjective Shakespere chose because it fits the situation perfectly. "That I must love a loathed enemy" is pretty self-explanitory. She loves him and she knows she is, again, SUPPOSED to hate him. This quote sets up the rest of the story for the struggles that lay ahead of Romeo and Juliet.
ReplyDelete7. I definately agree with Dalton No matter how much i don't want to."My only Love sprung from my only hate." I think when Juliet said this to the Nurse, she was curious on how much good (as in Romeo) could come out of Something she "hated" (as in the Montagues). she feels love for Romeo but as dalton said, realizes that she should actually hate him because of his family.
ReplyDelete"Too early seen unknown and known too late,"
i take as juliet doesn't quite know if it is too early to love Romeo and if she doesn't love now then she will never love.
"Prodigious birth of love to me," i took as it means that Juliet just found a new love in her heart and the love is enormous.
"That i must love a loathed enemy," means that she loves someone who she knows is her enemy or supposed to be anyway.
3. Mercutio is saying this to Romeo. I think he is saying something like I don't care what anyone thinks, im going to be me and someone can like it or not.
ReplyDeleteHe is telling Romeo to go in as he is and don't care what people say.?
3. Mercutio says this to romeo and it means that he doesnt care what people think. a visor is a mask and a visage is what you keep it in. He doesnt care if people think hes ugly or his attitude is bad.
ReplyDeleteNumber four, It was said by Romeo to Marcutio and Benvolio. I take it to mean that Romeo is deciding to let fate take its course. Allow destiny to rule, rather than making a difference in his future. He resigns his will to that of the powers that be and recognizes that this may lead him to an untimely death. The signigicance of this quote is to reitterate the fact that Romeo is going to die, a fact that was revealed in the earliest moments of the play. It was foreshadowing. It also makes you look for possible signs of his demise in Scene V.
ReplyDelete4. romeo sais this to marcutio and benvolio. He has a feeling that something bad is going to happen. He feels that he is going to die soon. maybe he sais this because he is really hurt and feels that the only way to get better is to kill himself. maybe hes just feeling sorry for himself or maybe he just has a feeling that if he goes to the party something bad is going to happen. he sais that fate will deside what happens to him. and he goes to the party and ignores the feeling.
ReplyDelete7. In scene five Juliet says this to the nurse. The statement that I took out of this quote is that, love can over rule or over power any hate or upset over someone or their family. Relating this back to the scene Juliet finds out after meeting Romeo that he is a Montague and tells the nurse that she shouldn't love someone that is hated by her family. But like i said her love for Romeo over powers the hatred that she could ever feel over him.
ReplyDeletePretty much this quote is setting up for the long run, to show that there will be struggles ahead with Romeo and Juliet

ReplyDelete4.Romeo says this to Marcutio and Benvolio. he seems to sense that something bad is going to happen. so he feels the only way to deal with this sense is to take a rather odd way out by possibly killing himself. the signigicance of all this is encourage the fact that he is going to die. this also is foreshadowing.
ReplyDelete#1)Benvolio says this to romeo. Romeo is so caught up in the looks of rosaline and believes no one could ever be as beautiful and perfect as her. Benvolio basically says in this quote that he will show Romeo a girl that makes rosaline look not as beautiful. What ends up happening is that romeo basically just falls for her as soon as he sees her. she feels the same about him. In the back of his head im guessin he is thinkin about her not rosaline.
ReplyDelete2. Juliet said this in response to lady capulet. She doesnt want to do all the work as if she doesnt want to fall in love with Paris and she will kinda flirt with paris
ReplyDelete7.This quote really speaks the whole story for me. It kind of sums up all thats going to happen in the rest of the story. Its deep.
ReplyDelete#7 Juliet said this to her nurse. That her only love was Romeo the son of a family rival. She feel in love before she even realized who he really was.
ReplyDelete1. This quote is said to Romeo from Benvolio. In this conversation, Romeo is talking about his love for Rosaline and Benvolio pretty much says, "I'll show you a girl that will blow Rosaline out of the water." This quote is significant because it has to deal with Romeo's love for Rosaline.

ReplyDeleteThis was said by Benvolio to Romeo. The context in which this was in was Romeo going on and on about the pure fair madden Rosaline and about how beautiful she is and how he loves her so. What Benvolio ment I believe is that romeo needs to quit wallowing in his own self pitty because there are many girls that prettier than Rosaline.
What I believe makes this quote significant is that it is hinting that Romeo is soon going to meet a girl far more beautiful or a girl to take the hypithetical place of Rosaline
3)Mercutio is saying this to Romeo. I think it means that he puts on a front . he secretly has something deep down that is tearing him up . but on the outside he acts as if nothing is bothering him and that he is happy go lucky.
ReplyDeleteits important because hes telling romeo not to be fake to go after his dreams..
1. Benvolio said this to Romeo. Romeo was always talking about Rosaline and I think that Benvolio was sick of it. I think that Benvolio just said this to get Romeo to believe there were better people out there and he should give up on Rosaline and quit talking about her.
ReplyDelete2. Juliet is saying this to her mother- Lady Capulet. She'll look at him in a way that her mother wants her to look at Paris, but she wont look past her mothers consent (permission). In other words if Lady Capulet wants juliet to like paris, then she will look at him to like him. The importance is she will possibly marry Paris, and this is right before she falls in love with Romeo.
ReplyDelete1) Benvolio said this to romeo. Romeo was talking about rosalines beauty and benvolio said this to show romeo that there are more people out there and that he thinks he can find someone even more beautiful out there for romeo. Also he was telling Romeo that he needs to move on because she will never love him.
