Each of the following are significant quotes in Act I. Respond to at least one of these, explaining who said it, to whom it was said, its meaning in your own words, and its significance to the play. Put the number of which quote you are discussing before your response.
*Really dig into these... I want to know you're thinking! :)*
1. "He jests at scars that never felt a wound." (Act II, Scene 2)
2. "By love, that first did prompt me to inquire./He lent me counsel and I lent him eyes./I am no pilot; yet, wert thou as far/As that vast shore washed with the farthest sea,/I should adventure for such merchandise." (Act II, Scene 2)
3. "O, swear not by the moon, th' insconstant moon,/That monthly changes in her circle orb,/Lest that thy love prove likewise variable." (Act II, Scene 2)
4. "For naught so vile that on the earth doth live/But to the earth some special good doth give;/Nor aught so good but, strained from that fair use,/Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse./Virtue istelf turns vice, being misapplied,/And vice sometime by action dignified." (Act II, Scene 3)
5."I have been feasting with mine enemy,/Where on sudden on hath wounded me/That's by me wounded. Both our remedies/Within thy help and holy physic lies./I bear no hatred, blessed man, for, lo,/My intercession likewise steads my foe." (Act II, Scene 3)
6. "Alas, poor Romeo, he is already dead: stabbed/with a white wench's black eye; run through the ear/with a love song; the very pin of his heart cleft with the/blind boy's butt-shaft; and is he a man to encounter Tybalt?" (Act II, Scene 4)
7. "These violent delights have violent ends/And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,/Which, as they kiss, consume." (Act II, Scene 6)

7. i think it means that something ends the way it begins, they fall in love with the first kiss.
ReplyDeleteits significance to the play is that they fell in love at the first kiss , and their love ends as quick as it began.
oh and it was friar saying it to romeo
ReplyDelete7. The friar said this to romeo. I think it's significant because i think it's sort of like Shakespeare foreshadowing Romeo and Juliet's death. The part that says 'these violent delights have violent ends," i think that means their relationship makes them happy but it's kind of crazy because their families are enemies. I think the violent end part is about how their deaths will also be kind of crazy and a shock, just how their relationship is. I'm not quite sure what the other two parts are saying, but I think it's just kind of like 'it will be shocking and a big deal, and all of this will be put into action just because of their one first kiss.' but i dont know?
ReplyDelete3 Juliet is speaking with Romeo. It means that if Romeo is to swear his love to Juliet at that moment, then he shouldn't swear his love is like the moon. Juliet only hopes that their love is more constant and lasting than the moon, because the moon changes phases so often, sometimes disappearing completely, sometimes overbearing in the amount of light it produces. The moon is duplicitous in this way, and Juliet wants their love to be something that never wanes or waxes, she wants it to be steady. The vow that Romeo was attempting to swear was his betrothal to Juliet, her permission for him to seek counsel with Friar Laurence and schedule a private wedding.
ReplyDelete1. Romeo is saying this to himself when he is outside Juliet's house.
ReplyDeleteHe is saying that its easy to joke around about something if its never happened to you. I think that when he is saying this he means that his friends can joke around about his love for Juliet because they have never been in love as deeply as Romeo. I think it means a lot to the play because it expresses how deep Romeo and Juliet's love is.
1. Romeo in juliets orchard, talking to himself
ReplyDeleteWhat i think he is saying is that its easy to fall in love. When he is saying a wound as in like yeah hes been in love before, and that lead him into a sadness. And by being hurt before its like he knows he really loves Juliet. And the jest part meaning he can joke about his so called love for Rosline because it wasnt really love. And all he cares for now is Juliet. So anyone can joke about Rosline because he is over her faily quick just proves that she meant little to him after he met Juilet.
7)The friar said this to romeo and i think this is Shakespeare's way of foreshadowing romeo and juliets death. Because he says these violent delights meaning romeo may have killed tybalt but he will still be happy because hes marrying juliet and they have violent ends meaning romeo and juliet will die in the end.
ReplyDelete7)i think that this quote forshadows alot. it could be forshadowing that romeo and juliet are going to quickly fall in love but then something tragic will happen to make them fall out of love or to make their love end . i also agree with carson in the part where he said stuff about romeo killing tybalt but still being happy.
ReplyDelete#3 Juliet is speaking to Romeo. She is telling Romeo that the moon is always changing and she wants him not to swear on the moon but something more concreate. If she didnt belive him they would never be married.
ReplyDelete#3. Juliet is talking to Romeo when this was said. I took it as Juliet is saying that she wants their love to be secure and not change like the moon constantly does. I completely agree with ashely when she said that the moon sometimes disappears all together and it doesn't produce enough light. That was a great point because Juliet doesn't want their love to disappear... she wants their love to be everlasting, strong, and constant... not like the moon that changes so often. I think that its significance to the play is that it was telling how Juliet felt about Romeo and how she wanted Romeo to feel about her. She didn't want to marry him and their love to be inconsistant... and if she didn't care, then she wouldn't have said anything at all. It really tells the feelings of their love.
ReplyDelete1)Romeo said this to himself while outside the Capulet's orchard. Jest means "to speak in a playful, or humorous way". So to say "he jests at scars that never felt a wound", I think he means that he can joke around about his love for Juliet with his friends. But although he jokes around, he realizes it can and will be as serious as a "wound". This is, again, foreshadowing by Shakespeare.
ReplyDelete1. Romeo says this in the Capulet's orchard. A scar is something that lasts forever and Romeo makes fun of it. So I think he's making fun of marriage and commitment because you don't get hurt from that.
ReplyDelete6. mercutio is saying this to benvolio. talking about romeo being missing.
ReplyDeleteI think he is trying to say that he is gone because he has a broken heart. He is saying that he is so heartbroken maybe he killed himself or ran away. or Possibly he had gotten in a fight for going to the party when he wasnt supose to be there. or he is going to have to fight tybalt. Maybe he didnt mean he is already dead like that. Maybe he ment it like its all he can think about and he acts like he has nothing else to live for.
3) Juliet is saying this quote to Romeo. This makes a lot of sense if you can understand what its trying to say. The moon changes phases quite often and what it is trying to say is that dont say your love that you swear is like the moon then it doesnt proove to be true love because if it were true love it wouldnt be like the moon because the moon changes and true love wouldnt. Basically all this means is that the moon changes and she doesnt want romeos love for her to change.
ReplyDelete3. Juliet is speaking to Romeo. she wants romeo to swear his love to her instead of to the moon.Juilet want their love to last longer than the phases of the moon, since they seem so short. Also the moon disappears once night is gone and Juliet doesn't want their love to disappear like the light of the moon. Juliet seemed to belive Romeo's promise since she agreed to marry him.
ReplyDelete7. Friar Lawrence says this to Romeo right before Juliet arrives for the wedding. I believe it means these sudden joys have sudden endings, and that love is like fire and gunpowder and when they meet they explode as is like when they kiss. Don't take love in the fast lane as there will be consequences and you will get bored with your new wife, it would be just as bad as going to slow. This line is significant because it explains just how fast Romeo and Juliet are moving along and gives a neutral opinion on what is going on between them.

ReplyDeleteI think this scene is about the fact that Romeo and Juliet's love is forbidden. When she says that she is "I have been feasting with mine enemy" Juliet being in love with him is like her disowning her family and going against everything they believe in. the rest of the passage refers to the fact that Romeo killed her cousin which hurts her because he was her favorite cousin and the man she loves killed him. Now her family definitely opposes Romeo and their chances at openly being in love. She doesn't hate Romeo, in fact, she still loves him, and she knows why he did it. She forgives Romeo and they end up getting married.

ReplyDeletefriar says this to romeo and i think he is being used by shakespeare to forshaddow how the crazy lustfull love they have is spiraling down and will end tragicly.
1. Romeo is saying this to himself as he stands in juliets orchard. I believe the significance of this quote is that he is saying that the wounds that he already has will never be brought back. So Romeo is saying that the love he had for Roseline is only a scar and that the love for Juliet is way stronger and over powers the wound that was left by Roseline.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Juliet said this because she is in love with Romeo and his family is her family's enemy. If her family found out they would most likely send for Romeos death.
ReplyDelete3. Juliet is saying this to Romeo in the balcony. she is telling him not to swear to anytning but to her, his love for her, especially because she wants to be with him 'forever', 'till death do them part' and the moons phases are so short just as gabby says. the signifigance to the play is well its a proposal and it leads to them getting married and as that is disastrous, it leads to their deaths.
