Here are the questions for Act I. Provide a response for at least one of these. Answer thoroughly and use evidence from the text. Place the number of the question before your response.
*I expect more depth in these answers this time around. USE THE TEXT to support your answers!*
1. Between Scene 1 and Scene 2, Shakespeare breaks up a rhymed couplet (2 lines that rhyme). What are the two lines? What does he achieve by doing this? What does this say about our playwright?
2. What do Juliet's musings to herself (or so she thinks) reveal about her character?
3. What doubts and fears does Juliet express even as she realizes that Romeo loves her?
4. Explain the role that darkness plays in helping Romeo and Juliet learn of their love for each other.
5. The love scene in Capulet's garden (Scene 2) is the one of the most famous in all of literature. Why do you think this is?
6. The Friar and the Nurse play important roles in the union of Romeo and Juliet. Do you think that their decision to be intermediaries between the young lovers is wise? Why or why not?
7. Most of Romeo & Juliet is written in blank verse, because it gives an elegant and formal feel to the text. However, in Scene 4, the conversation between Romeo and his friends is NOT written in blank verse. What is the purpose of this change?
8. How does Juliet's opening passage in Scene 5 capture how time drags when you're waiting for somthing to happen?
9. Although the events of Act II are joyful ones, Shakespeare foreshadows, or hints at, more sinister events that will occur later. Find examples of foreshadowing and explain.

NOw old desire doth in his deathbed life, that fair for which love groaned for and would die.
ReplyDeletehe lets us know that Romeo's love for Rosaline is coming to an end. It is forshadowing that Romeo is going to leave his love for Rosaline and fall in love with another. It says that shakespear like to forshadow in a subtle way.
3. She seems to be worried that he is simply infatuated with her, not actually in love with her. However, after they continued their discussion and it was settled that Romeo loved her, her worries turned to what would become of him if he was caught by her family. She didn't want him to be killed because of their love, but she also didn't want him to give his name up so soon because it would be such a permanent change so soon into the relationship. Also, even though she had discovered that the affection was more than a way for him to cause her and her family pain she didn't want him to make any vows that he would not follow through on, and changing his name would definitely be a vow. But once it was settled that Romeo would find the friar so he would be able to arrange the marriage, the final vow that resulted in Juliet's fear of betrayel from him the next day.
ReplyDelete7. I think the purpose of the change is to show that there IS a change in the way they talk to each other. I think maybe it might be to show that even though the boys seem a lot older than they are, they still are just kids who joke with each other every once in a while. Like when Mercutio was kind of making fun of Romeo for being 'in love' with Rosaline towards the beginning. Because blank verse gives the text an elegant and formal feel, I don't think Shakespeare wanted that effect between Romeo and his friends. Just kind of like how now a days sometimes people are really articulate and talk really well in front of the more 'important' people, but when they're with their friends they don't talk as well. I think it might be kind of the same thing, I think Shakespeare just wanted to show that even though Romeo is old enough to get married, he really is just a kid who has friends and they actually are just like 'normal' friends.
ReplyDelete6. This question made me think a little bit but i came the conclusion that it is fairly unwise of them to be doing this. They shouldn't be doing this because if either of them get caught... it could mean trouble for both of them. Even though the friar (from my understanding) is not a Capulet or Montegue, he could still get in some serious trouble because he knows Romeo and Juliet and their families. The Nurse is basically a Capulet and is the care-taker of Juliet. She knows of them and could get into alot of trouble because she knows it isn't right. Regardless, They both do it because of the love and care they each have (Nurse for Juliet and Friar for Romeo). They understand they are in love and just want them to be happy.

ReplyDeleteThat’s three hours since nine o'clock, but she hasn’t come back.
Since Juliet is in love with Romeo every second must seem like forever when she is not with him. She is waiting for the nurse to come back so she can hear what Romeo said. When you are sitting around thinking or waiting for something it kinda makes time go slower and drag on forever. Since Juliet is also anxious to hear, she thinks time is going by fast when its actually going by slow.. I think she also doesn't realize how far the nurse had to travel to get to Romeo. If the nurse traveled a long distance then it would take her more time. But Juliet just wants to hear the news that her love said.
4. By keeping there love a secret they are keeping from having an even bigger fued between families. They feel like they must keep it a secret because they are from fueding families. Since no one knows about them its not a very big deal. By having a secret it shows what they would do for one another, because they are forbidden to see another they would go through the chances of their families finding out.
ReplyDelete6) it is unwise because both the friar and nurse could get in trouble and lose their jobs. On the other hand it might seem wise to the nurse and friar because they have been around Romeo and Juliet for their whole lives and realize how much they both love each other and they know how important it is to them to get married. I personally think it would be unwise for them just because their punishment could be life threatening if they got caught.
ReplyDelete6) I cant decide whether i think its either wise or unwise. so i think that it is wise because maybe if their parents found out that they helped the two get married then they might be thankful because the two of them helped their children find happiness in eachother even though they were supposed to be enemies. however, it could be unwise because if there parents didnt look at it in that aspect then they could have them severly punished for going behind there back and letting the two secretly get married without the blessings from both parents. :)
ReplyDelete#9 Sheakespeare does forshadow a lot. An instace for this is were Romeo claims he is already dead. This might forshadow his upcoming death in the end. Since the familys were enemys he probably felt her parents would have killed him the instant they found out about the marriage. I think he forshadowed to keep some of us interested. Who knows maybe the father would kill him or they might just be the best of friends.

ReplyDeleteThe Friar has a very close relationship with Romeo and the Nurse has a very close relationship with Juliet. Neither the Nurse, nor the Friar really care what Romeo and Juliet's parents think are best for them (or at least that's what I understood). So the Friar wanted Romeo happy and the Nurse wanted Juliet happy. Was the the wisest decision? Not at all. And I think the Nurse especially realized this when she was teasing Juliet. I think she was not only teasing her, but she was chewing on a Twix to buy time to decide what she should do. The logical thing to do was to tell the kid's parents what was going on. It was more logical, but it wasn't more just. I think the Nurse and the Friar did the right thing, but not the smart thing. I think it will come back to bite them later in the story.
ReplyDelete3. Some doubts of Juliet are she knows she loves Romeo but she doesn't know if its the same with Romeo. She thinks it might be the same situation Romeo had with Rosaline. Also Juliet is scared of the feud between their families. When Romeo is outside her window Juliet was scared her family would find Romeo and kill him.
ReplyDelete8)'The clock struck nine when I did send the nurse. In half an hour she promis'd to return.' 'Is three long hours yet she is not come.' Juliet seems worried that something happened in this to the nurse who was sent to relay a message to romeo. And im sure everyone who has been excited to get somethin has been so anxious it seems like seconds turn to minutes and minutes to hours. In this Juliet is thinking like this and really she knows she cant get back as soon as she would like. Even though she knows this she tries to make it seem like she is taking forever and sortive begins to get upset. ' O God, she comes. O honey nurse what news?' Here Juliet sees the nurse and anxiously awaits for the answer
ReplyDelete4. romeo and juliet find out that there parents would not approve of them being together. they are both mad about this and get married anyway. Then romeo gets banished and juliet relizes even more that she loves him. All the bad things keeping them from being together make them relize how much they want to be together and it shows because they go behind there familys back to see each other and get marryed. If all these bad things didnt happen there love might not be as apparent.
ReplyDelete3.Juliet seems to be worried that Romeo is simply in lust with her (as he was with Rosaline) instead of in love with her. Once Juliet had talked with Romeo she did realize that he is in fact in love with her. She still fears however, that if they are caught by Juliet's parents that it could mean the end for Romeo. Juliet also didn't want Romeo to give his name up so quickly because it could cause more trouble than they both would realize. Also, Juliet have concerns about the vows that Romeo might not be able to follow through on; like giving up his name. Juliet had taken her family into consideration though, she knew that their love would cause pain for her family which did worry her some.
ReplyDelete8. As juliet waits for her nurse to return from asking romeo if they will be married or not. Time may seem to drang because from wanting to know so bad that one hour could seem like five. I believe in juliets situation that of course time will tick at a very slow pace because she is so worried about how her life will change after the nurse came to speak to her about romeos decision. I also think that the passage helps comprehend that time is the most undecesive thing when you want something.
ReplyDelete5. The orchard scene is so popular because it's the scene that most people can relate to their life and is the kickoff to there love. In this scene, Romeo overhears Juliet talking to herself about romeo while sitting on her balcony. She doesn't know that Romeo is there so she continues on talking about how much she loves him and how she is giddy with excitement about getting married to him. This scene explains her love for Romeo and sets the mood for the rest of the book.

ReplyDeleteI think it's one of the most famous scenes in literature because Romeo and Juliet are both thinking about eachother at he same time and they don't know. Also, they are saying cute things to eachother while he is on the ground and she is on the balcony. During this scene they realize their love for eachother. After realizing their love for eachother they state their betrothel. Everything happens so fast and it is actually a case of true love.

ReplyDeletewhen juliet says "to bear poison, i would temper it" forshaddows that she will be wanting for romeo to return so that she could poison him. and the fact the we know she loves him she will most likely die with him to be with him forever.
9. Juliet foreshadows the fact that Romeo and her will die together.
ReplyDelete6. their choice to help the union between romeo and juliet is not wise. like shaye said, they could be punished severly, or even killed for helping join two people from totally different sides of the battlefield. plus, the nurse is very aware that lady capulet and capulet want juliet to marry paris, so she should know that helping them be together is going to be a disaster. not to forget, the parents didnt approve of a marriage at the time, they were thinking of paris but not so soon, and by going behind the capulets back and helping them get married, is not the way to 'let them down easy' about paris and explain that the nurse and friar helped two enemies marry.
