R&J Act IV Questions

Here are the questions for Act I. Provide a response for at least one of these. Answer thoroughly and use evidence from the text. Place the number of the question before your response.

*I expect depth in these answers. USE THE TEXT for support!*

1. Describe Friar Lawrence's plan. Evaluate it. What do you anticipate might go wrong with it?
2. In Scene 1, when Juliet encounters Paris at Friar Lawrence's cell, she is elusive with her wording yet again. How does she play with words to avoid lying to Paris?

4. Does Juliet tell the Nurse of the plan? Why or why not?
5. What three fears rise up in Juliet just before she takes the potion? What does she plan to do if the potion does not work?
6. What does Juliet's soliloquy in Scene 3 reveal about her personality? How has Juliet's character developed since the start of the play?
7. Who discovers Juliet's body? Why is this significant? What is his or her reaction?
8. Do you think Paris is worthy of Juliet? Why or why not?
9. How is Friar Lawrence's remark, "She's not well married that lives married long,/But she's best married that dies married young." a misstatement?
10. What is the purpose of the conversation between the musicians and Peter at the end of the Act? Where else have we seen a scene like this?

  1. 1) Friar Lawrence's plan goes like this: First he wants Juliet to drink a special liquid that is meant to make her appear dead for 42 hours. Next, he will have Friar John (who is from Mantua) bring a letter Romeo explaining the plan. What was next to happen was Romeo would come back to Verona at the right time so he could get Juliet and they could run away together. As with any "full-proof" plan, everything can go wrong. For this plan, Romeo did not get the explanation letter and when he got back he found Juliet in her "dead" state. He thought she was actually dead so he committed suicide. When she woke and realized what happened, she also committed suicide.

  2. 7. The Nurse finds Juliet dead in her bed. This is significant, because the Nurse was closer to Juliet more so than anyone left in Verona. She was more like a mother than Lady Capulet, and more of a role-model than Capulet himself. Juliet thought very highly of the Nurse, and vice versa, and therefore it was essential that the Nurse be the one to find Juliet. The Nurse, unsuspecting at first, called out to Juliet, however, when she discovered her laying there without a pulse she called out that her lady was dead and that she needed help. Unable to see it, I imagine the nurse with a tear-stained face as she calls out the the Lord and Lady of the house.

  3. 8. I really don't think that Paris is worthy of Juliet. I just don't like what we've seen of his character. Like I know that the daughter didn't really get any opinion on who she had to marry back then, but Paris really didn't care what Juliet thought--at all. He just wanted Capulet to say 'yes' and that'd be the end of it, which I guess is how it was back then, but Paris just seems sort of inconsiderate. For example, right before Juliet ran into Paris at the Friar's cell the friar kind of asked Paris what Juliet thought of it and all Paris had to say was 'Tybalt just died, I can't even talk to her about anything like marriage at the moment.' To me, it kind of seemed like he knew he might be wrong, jumping so eagerly into marriage with a girl he hasn't even talked to about marriage yet, but like he didn't want to admit that, so he made up excuses.

I don't know, it could just be me.

  4. 8. i also say that Paris is not good for Juliet. So far he seems like a bad guy in general. I think he would be the type of guy who is all caring about himself and not his wife. If he were to marry Juliet he should have been there in times when Romeo wasn't. Especially when her cuz got killed, he could have went to her house and talked with her. It also seems to me that Paris doesn't even care about her. He just wants her parent's approval. If they did get married i say they would have gotten a divorce.

The interaction with the musicians near the end of act IV is what is called comic relief. It is to be used as a light hearted way to maybe distract the audience from the death and heaviness of the last happenings in the play. We have also seen this following Mercutio and Tybalt death.

  6. 8) i think he is but isnt worthy of juliet. my reasoning for he is worthy is because that was just the way it was back then. the girls didnt have very much choice in who they were married too the dads did all the deciding. so for him to not really care about what juliet thought was just the normal thing. it didnt have to neccisarly be about being in love. i dont think he is worthy thought because like kelsy and whit said he just doesnt seem like a very good guy. he seems very cocky and all about himself.

  7. 7. The nurse was the first to find Juliet and discover that Juliet had died the day of her wedding. But unfortunately Juliet was not dead, only in a state were she had barely any pulse. This is significant because the nurse was the person Juliet could always come to, she was like a mother to Juliet and for the nurse to be the one to find Juliet must have been heart braking. The nurse also helped Juliet through times of need.
The nurses reaction to Juliet's "death" was unpredictable because at first she thought that Juliet was only in a deep sleep but turns out that Juliet was cold and stiff with barely to no pulse. At the end when she finds out she calls to the lead people of the house for help because Juliet had "died"

Juliet doesn't tell the Nurse of her plans. She doesn't because she the Nurse would probably try to talk her out of it or would somehow ruin Juliet's plans. Juliet almost tells her but changes her mind when she realizes that that the least people that know, the better.

She is slipping in words basically confessing to Paris that she doesnt want to marry him. Like when they are very first introduced he mentions oh nice to meet you my wife and shes like dude im not your wife yet so basically, dont call me that. She also mentions ill confess that i love HIM obviously not being Paris. And i understand when shes saying oh my face doesnt belong to me because she doesnt get to choose who she marrys, she is basically stuck with whatever her parents make her do even if she feels its not right. Like after she made that scene with her dad you get to see how they think she should act. And basically saying your out of the family if you dont do as i say

I don't think that Paris is very worthy of Juliet,or at least if he is he hasn't shown it. Now Juliet didn't really have much of a say when it came to Paris's and Juliets marriage, but it seemed that Paris didn't really care if she wanted to marry him or not. All he wanted to do was marry Juliet and he was dead set on that idea. Which on Paris's part is pretty insensitive to Juliet. Also when Tybalt was killed, Paris should have been there for Juliet even if she wasn't that saddened. It was all a matter of Paris acting as if he cared more about himself rather than caring for Juliet when she needed someone to be there for her.

  11. 1) well the friar happens to have this liquor stuff that knocks you out for 42 hours and makes you feel and look dead. I dont think the plan is appropriate juliet just needs to grow up and tell her parents. She wouldnt be put in the situation had she told her parents earlier. When she drinks the potion and appears dead the friar tries writing romeo. The problem is the letter could not get there in time and romeo would probably kill himself. The other problem is that the potion may not work right and just kill her anyways. Personally i would think of something better than this...

  12. #3 Juliet lies because she tells her father she is going to Friar Lawerance to confess. She really goes to ask him for help. Since he was the one who married them. And it is all because she tells her parents that she will marry Paris but now needs help to get out of the marriage and run away with Romeo.

  13. 1. The plan was for the friar to give Juliet this potion that would make her sleep for about 2 days. Then the friar would give a letter to
Romeo telling him about the potion and everything. Everyone would think juliet was dead except for Romeo and the Friar. A lot of things could go wrong with this plan. One is that Romeo doesnt get the letter and he arrives and thinks Juliet's dead.

  14. 4. Juliet doesnt tell the Nurse of her plans, because she feels the Nurse will just talk her out of it, or even like ruin her plans. Juliet almost tells the Nurse her plans but then at the last second because she doesnt want her plans ruined.

  15. 1. Friar lawrences plan wast very thought out by all means. they didnt consider things that could go wrong they just assumed it would work. he gave juliet a poison that would make her seem dead for 48 hours, he would send for romeo and tell him the plan so he could come get her when she woke up, and they could live happily ever after. obviously it doesnt work because they end up dead somehow.

  16. 1) Friar Lawrence plans to have Juliet take a potion to where she falls asleep for 2 days. Then The friar sent a letter to tell romeo that she wasn't actually dead. Many things could go wrong with this plan, like romeo doesn't get the letter or they bury juliet.

  17. 1. The Friar's plan is that Juliet will take a vial that makes Juliet fall into a deep sleep for 42 hours. It will stop her heart and make her skin cold and dead-like, so when she is awoken on her wedding day, they will think she is dead and they will take her to the Capulet's grave site where she will meet up with Romeo. Romeo will find out about this by a letter sent from the Friar. Something that could go wrong is the letter doesn't get to Romeo fast enough or is intercepted by someone.

  18. 8. I think that Paris is perfectly suitable for Juliet. He has wealth, kindness, and is good looking. In juliets' position, Paris would've been a more appropriate husband. Especially considering the time, her age, and her status in Verona. Paris would've been a wise choice.

  19. The friars plan is to have juliet take this potion that will put her to sleep, but on the outside she will look dead. When someone finds her, on the morning of the wedding, they would announce her death, and she would be put in the capulet vault. Once it was night and everyone was gone, the potion would wear off and she would wake up. Romeo would be there to take her to another city, and he would know because the friar would send him a letter explaining everything, and they would live happily ever after. the problem with the plan is that romeo might not get the letter, and he'll kill himself after killing paris because he's grieving, and juliet could have possibly died from an overdose. Plus she couldve waken up too early and she wouldve been found out, and the friar probably wouldve gotten in a LOT of trouble, more so than he might already.

  20. 4. Juliet does not tell the nurse about the plan. She couldnt risk someone finding out about the plan. If the nurse new she would probably tell because she thought marrying paris was a good thing. If the nurse told it would just ruin everything. Chances are when the nurse saw everyone crying and upset she would of told. It was very important to keep it all a big secret.

  21. 1. The Friar's plan at first seems logical, but that is until you take in all the things that could go wrong.
The temporary poison that he made could have been made wrong and is actually a real poison that would kill Juliet for good. Or Juliet might not take the poison the wright way and end up permenantly dead. The biggest thing that could gor wrong though is if she takes the poison and collapses maybe falling down stairs or out of her balcony. If that happens then she's as good as dead.

  22. 1. The Friar's plan is to have Juliet drink a poison that he makes up that will temporarily kill her. He tells her to drink it before bed the night before the wedding so her parents will find her and have her funeral. After they put her in the tomb, the Friar and Romeo would come and get her out after she wakes.
