Act V Quotes

Each of the following are significant quotes in Act I. Respond to at least one of these, explaining who said it, to whom it was said, its meaning in your own words, and its significance to the play. Put the number of which quote you are discussing before your response.

*Some of you aren't covering everything you need to cover and not receiving full credit. See italics if you forget what you're supposed to discuss! Really dig into these... I want to know you're thinking! :)*

  1. 2. "I do beseech you, sir, have patience./Your looks are pale and wild and do import/Some misadventure." is the quote i choose and this was said by Romeos man and what he was saying is that he feels Romeo needs to be alone after the news of the death of Juliet this is a very significant and very curtail because this set up Romeo to find Juliet alone post Paris’s death and the news wasn’t even correct and led to the tragic end of the life’s of Romeo and Juliet.

  2. 3. "My poverty, but not my will, consents." That was said by the apothecary to Romeo. It's important basically because he's saying I will only sell you this poison because I am poor and need the money, not because I think it's right. I think he said this because he realized that he DID need the money, but the punishment for selling poison in Mantua was the death penalty, so he wanted to make it clear that he didn't actually WANT to sell it. "I pay thy poverty, and not they will" was said by Romeo to the apothecary. I think Romeo was just kind of agreeing with the apothecary, and he was doing that by saying 'Okay. So I'll pay you for this because you are poor, not because you want me to buy this.' I almost think that Romeo would've said anything to please the apothecary and get him to sell him the poison because at first it seemed like the apothecary wasn't going to sell it.

  3. 12)I believe Prince Escalus said this to the Friar. This quote is simple (which is partly why I'm commenting on it). The Prince said this after the Friar gave his story and interpretation of what happened the previous 5 days. The Prince said this because he was, in effect, saying "you are holy so I believe your story because I'm sure your not lying." This shows the Prince may not exactly be fair in his rulings throughout the whole play. I say this because (even though he didn't), what if the Friar was lying? If he made the whole thing up and he killed Romeo and Juliet? Just saying. The Prince would have believed him and punished somebody else. This is significant because previously the Prince may have not been so fair in his rulings, like Romeo being banished.

  4. 12) the prince said this back to the friar after the friar telling him all about romeo and juliet. The prince doesnt even appear to be mad he sees it like he was just trying to help. Surprise that is exactly what he was trying to do he just wanted to stop the feud in the families. Im sure the friar and the prince were on the same side to see that it took the death of each families child to stop the stubbornness between both of the families. The significance to the play would go to show how stubborn the families were to wait and take their feud all the way until the death of their very own children...

  5. 10. juliet is saying this to the already dead romeo. she is saying that he left no poison for her to drink, so she cannot join him wherever he went (i could say where but i dont want to start an argument) and she will kiss his lips to get the poison from them. the importance of her words is that sense she cant get the poison to kill herself, she will use the knife and join romeo in death.

  6. 6. Paris said this to page. It means that paris is trying to ask why is someone trying to ruin his night of love. why would someone try and take his and Juliets "love" away. Because in the text it says someone is walking around trying to steal his love away

Its significance to the play is its showing his true feelings for juliet

  7. 5. This was the Friar talking more to himself than to the only other person in the room Friar John. In this scene, the Friar had just been informed that his letter to Romeo could not complete it's route due to unforeseen circumstances. The Friar is specifically saying that he realizes that Juliet will be angry when Romeo is not there to greet her when she wakes up.

  8. 2. Balthasar said this to Romeo

I believe Balthasar is trying to tell Romeo to have patience for that the letter will be sent and the frair will be able to get it. Also he is trying to tell Romeo that he is pale and looks wild like he is about to hurt himself or someone else.

Its significance to the play is that if Romeo would have taken Balthasar edvice then he probably would not have ended up dieing as fast as he did.

  11. #11 Friar Lawrence is speaking to the Prince. He is first blaming himself for the death of the two newlyweds. For he is supposed to be the person everyone goes to for answers but he was wrong with his advise. He might stand there at the scene and blames himself in a way but then he is not the one trying to keep them apart. He was just trying to help Romeo and Juliet be together.

  12. 6.paris said this to his page.
Paris is asking why someone would attempt to foil is his night of love. Paris doesn't understand of know that Juliet's love has already been obtained by Romeo. In the text it describes that someone is lurking about trying to steal Paris's and Juliet's "love".

This is significant because it gives the reader a better idea about Paris's true feelings about Juliet

  13. 1. Romeo says this to Balthasar when he gives Romeo the bad news about his beloved Juliet's death. I believe it means that he will rebel against the families by taking his own life and forever being with his Juliet. This is significant because it shows how much tragedy one feud by two families can cause.

  14. 4. Friar lawrnece is saying this to friar john. Friar lawrence had givin friar john a letter to give to Romeo. The letter had the plan to get Juliet after she "came back alive." well everyone got sick and no one was aloud to leave. So friar john couldnt get the letter to Romeo. Well Friar lawrnece is saying that this letter was very important and its bad luck that he couldnt give it to Romeo. And bad things mite happen because of the letter not getting to him.

Romeo is saying this after he killed Paris at the tomb. Since he still thinks Juliet is dead he is sad and basically saying oh im a dead man too, so hes saying you were just killed by another dead man. Possibly because he was about to drink the posien. I think this quote really means what he is about to do, like he is about to die after saying this.

  16. 11. Friar Lawrence is talking to the Prince. The Friar is just saying that he maybe is to blame and he maybe isn't. He thinks that maybe if he did something different Romeo and Juliet could still be alive but then if the Capulets and Montagues never had a feud then they would both still be alive. If everyone cooperated then everything would've been fine.

  17. 1. Romeo is saying this to Balthasar.

He is saying something like i dissagree or i rebel against you. This is when romeo finds out about Juliet. He is ready to go to her side. But Balthasar is telling him to calm down. Romeo is freaking out. I think it shows how Romeo and Juliet's love is soo strong.

  18. 10. Juliet said this to the Dead Romeo. She is saddened by the death of Romeo and sees that he poisoned himself. She wants to join Romeo in death by poisoning herself but sees that there is no poison left. That is why she kills herself by the dagger. Because she cannot poison herself and join Romeo in the same death. Again, this is kind of a weird way of Juliet showing her love for Romeo. She loves him so much that she cannot live without him, so she joins him in death.

  19. 12) the prince (esculas) said this to the friar. Alls the prince was trying to do was stop the fueds between the houses. To do this he lets both children die from both houses and see how they handle it.
