Here are the questions for Act I. Provide a response for at least one of these. Answer thoroughly and use evidence from the text. Place the number of the question before your response.
*I expect depth in these answers. USE THE TEXT for support!*
1. At the start of Scene 1, why is Romeo happy and expecting joyful news? What is ironic about the words he is saying?
2. How does the exhcange between Romeo and Balthasar suggest the role of fate in bringing about the tragedy?
3. What is Romeo thinking and feeling as he enters the Capulet's tomb? (Use the text and the picture on page 765 to guide your answer.)
4. Why is Romeo's intention to feed himself to the tomb especially tragic?
5. In the tomb, Romeo pulls back the shroud to reveal what he thinks is Juliet's dead body. What clues about her appearance should have led to him to realize she was still alive? What is tragically ironic in Romeo's observations about Juliet?
6. How might the outcome have been different if the characters had come to the churchyard in a different order?
7. Explain how the reading strategy of cause and effect works in this play, especially within the last two Acts?
8. The chain of events in the play leads to the violent deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo, and Juliet. How might some or all of this bloodshed been prevented?
9. Why isn't it surprising that Friar Lawrence's scheme fails? Base your answer both on your own experiences and on the events in the play.
10. In what ways is chance to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? In what ways are Romeo and Juilet to blame for their deaths? In what ways are their families to blame?
11. Was it necessary necessary for Romeo and Juliet to die for the feud between the Montagues and Capulets to end? Explain.
12. What lessons can be learned from Shakespeare's play about the destructive effects of hatred? Support your answer.

ReplyDeleteI have said some of this earlier in the extra question but to be frank I believe that if a grudge wouldn’t have been held by Tybalt then he wouldn’t have died and neither would have Mercutio. and the death of Paris would have been defiantly avoided if Juliet would have simply told her parents that she is already in love and that she married Romeo and because if her parents were true to their word and wanted what was best for her than they would have been ok with is they may not have approved but would have been supportive. and I am not too sure if I need to say much more about how the death of Romeo and Juliet could be avoided because the slaying of Tybalt meant he was banished which led to the friars plan which got scrued up and ended in two young happy people committing suicide.
12. Any hatred you have for something can definitely blind any logic you might have. For example, if the two families hadn't been feuding, then Romeo and Juliet would've probably felt like they could tell their families about each other, then Juliet wouldn't of had an arranged marriage to Paris, and Romeo and Juliet could've lived. So one lesson that could be learned is to always try and never hate. What's even worse is that the Montague's and Capulet's couldn't even remember what their feud was about exactly. They just knew they 'hated' each other. Almost every single death that happened in the play, could've been prevented if the two families had just made up a long time ago. The bottom line is that nothing good can ever come from hate, just like how all this bad stuff happened in Romeo and Juliet just because of the HATE between families.
ReplyDelete8)My answer to this is VERY similar to my answer to the Act V Extra question. The ENTIRE STORY boils down the the fued between the Montagues and Capulets. If they would have gotten their heads out of their butts, none of this would've happened. Although the deaths throughout the story displace the light on it, the moral of the story is to let go of grudges. If the Montagues and Capulets wouldn't have been fighting in the first place, nobody would have died. AND there would have been happy little Romeo-Juliet babies.
ReplyDelete11) no not at all should even have had anything close to dying. If both families werent so pig headed and stupid they probably wouldnt of had a feud in the first place.
ReplyDeletePersonally i think it is extremely bad that the families hate each other so much and they dont even know why. The reason has kind of just floated away and been washed away with hate. This is the most selfish thing they could do causing there own kids to die over their NO REASON FEUD!!!
5. In the text it said he touched her, wouldnt he have known she was warm still. If she would of died she would have had could tough skin. Also, if you die your lips turn blue, and her lip are blue... Last she was just laying there, if she was actually dead they would of had her burried. So he would have known..
ReplyDelete5) Romeo Should have realized she was still alive because when he touched her she still would have been warm. once people die there skin becomes very cold. Peoples lips also turn blueish purple and hers were still normal color. She also was just laying there and you could just tell she didnt have any sorts of preserving done to her.
ReplyDeleteFriar Lawrence's scheme failing isnt surprising because their were big huge holes in his plans. a major mistake he made was his letter. if the letter had been delivered, romeo wouldnt have killed himself, and then juliet wouldnt have killed herself. its like when i called my mom one day to ask if i culd go to gym zone, she said yes. i went, left my fone in the locker while i practiced, and she tried to call and see if i'd left because she ended up needing me to stay home. if i'd have gotten the call, i culdve gotten a ride home and did what i needed, just as if romeo had gotten the letter, he and juliet wouldnt have died. that is why it isnt surprising that friar's plan failed.
ReplyDelete10. Chance because Friar John was held up and unable to finish delivering his letter to Romeo due to the police's idea that he had been in the home of someone who was infected with the Black Plague.
ReplyDeleteRomeo and Juliet because they never told anyone but the Friar, the Nurse, and a few other people about their plan, which means that they were less likely to have work perfectly anyway.
The parent's because they never gave their children any inkling that they would be accepting of the marriage in the future. Therefore, it goes back to the Romeo and Juliet problem because they hardly told anyone.
1. Romeo is talking to him self and is happy and over joyed becuase he said that all day long he had a strange feeling that had made him cheerful. And the reason why this feeling was probably occuring because of his dream that he had were Juliet came and found him dead. And she brought him back to life with a kiss...and from that he became a emperor.
ReplyDeleteThe ironic thing about this whole thing, is that it really happened like this. Even though Romeo did not come back to life after Juliet kissed him and he didnt become a emperor afterwards. I think its sad that he had that cheerful feeling about dieing and it actually happened to him. Its sort of like karma.
12. One lesson that can be learned about the destructive effects of hatred from Romeo and Juliet is that even when you hate someone you shouldnt make it where your kid cant talk to you about stuff having to deal with them. If juliet could talk to her parents about Romeo none of this probably would have happend. The story would defiantly be diffrent and possibly have a better outcome. Your kid should feel like they can talk to you about anything. Even if you hate someone you should be understanding. Or at least make sure the kid knows you will listen.
ReplyDelete#4 Romeos intention to kill himself was especially tragic OVER JULIETS FAKE DEATH! Due to Friar John not making the letter in time for Romeo knowing what was happening. IT WAS ALL MENT FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO RUN OFF TOGETHER! TO LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. THIS STORY SHOWS THAT LIFE DOES NOT ALWAYS HAVE A HAPPY ENDING!!
ReplyDelete12.
ReplyDeleteHatred can be a blinding emotion that can lead to actions that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. Like capulet's angry rant at Juliet for what he thought was her being ungrateful. Hatred made it basically impossibe for Juliet to talk to her parents about Romeo, and maybe if it wasn't such an inflicting emotion Romeo and Juliet probably wouldn't have had to take such drastic measures for their love.
11. I believe that it was not necessary for them to take their lives. Both families are big girls and boys and they should learn to get along with each other whether they like it or not. Their kids should have never been involved with it. If the families would have learned to grow, then their kids would still be alive. Although, I do believe Juliet should have just came out and told her family she was married to Romeo and then take off to seek him and forget about her old family and all the feuds and think about the future with her loving husband.

ReplyDeleteRomeo said it was a strange feeling making him happy and joyful. But it ended up just being a dream. His dream was about him dying, then by having someone kiss him on his lips it brought him back to life and then he became emperor. It sound familiar when you read on, because he thinks juliet is dead so he drinks the poisen, then dies because he came too early. But then Juliet wakes up and then sees him and she does kiss his lips, but nothing happens.
12. One lesson that can be learned is to drop grudges you hold on people. The Capulets and Montagues held a grudge on each other for however long and that got some people killed. It got Romeo and Juliet killed because they couldn't tell their families that they liked someone who was supposed to be their rival. If the Capulets and Montagues were never in a feud then things would've been a lot better.
ReplyDelete8. It could have possibly been prevented if Romeo would have told Juliet's parents about their love. And if friends wouldn't have been in other's peoples business then maybe everyone wouldn't have died in fights. Maybe even if the two families didn't have the little hatred against each other, some of this could have been prevented.
ReplyDelete4. I think that when Romeo committed suicide it was very tragic because it wasn't supposed to happen like that. Romeo was supposed to get a letter... but didn't, Juliet was supposed to wake up before Romeo got there... but didn't, and Romeo and Juliet were supposed to live happily ever after just like every other story. He was supposed meet Juliet and Juliet wasn't really dead but Romeo didn't know that... If that makes sense.
ReplyDelete9) it isnt surprising because there were so many things that could of gone wrong. For example the potion given to juliet could of gone wrong or romeo couldn't recieve the message.
